Laughter

I love this video of Mr. Mister laughing. It's more than a month old, but I just now got it to upload correctly. It's kind of embarrassing on my part, but sharing his laughter with you is worth it!

Attention Blog Readers

Here's a helpful tool for all of you avid blog readers. Check out Google Reader. You can enter in all of the blog sites you read on a regular basis (or news websites or any website) and it lets you know when those sites are updated. It's particularly helpful if you follow a lot of blogs because then you don't have to check ten different websites, only to find that most of them still haven't been updated since the last time you checked.

Happenings...

Some recent events in the world of Mr. Mister...

We've had a lot of snow this week so we dressed him in his snowpants and winter jacket and took him to "play" in the snow. Similar to our swimming experience, it took more time to get ready than we actually spent in the snow. And he didn't so much play but more just layed there with a non expressive face. It was probably more for our entertainment than for his, but it made for some cute pictures!

Two days ago, we were exploring some of Mr. Mister's favorite things around the house and he wanted to go see the wooden rack with our keys hanging on it. He got more excited than usual, got a good grip on one of the key chains, pulled harder than I thought he could pull, and pulled the entire rack out of the wall! It was screwed in with a drywall screw, so it was a pretty impressive accomplishment for someone his size. I'm in for it when he starts moving around on his own.

The final piece of exciting news is that we can now see his neck! For a while his head has just been sitting on his shoulders and we wondered if there was really a neck under all those chins. But it's there and it's visible. This is big progress for our little man.

Curious Marcos

Mr. Mister is becoming increasingly curious and wants to explore everything (which means putting everything in his mouth). His new thing is to make this cute little noise when he spots something he wants to go see. I carry him over to it and he reaches out and attempts to put it in his mouth. We could spend all day just walking around the house exploring, as he leads the way with his noises. Some of his favorite things to see are his football, the bright numbers of digital clocks and of the thermostat on the space heater in his room, any kind of light, the mirror, the key rack, the lamp, the wall, and my feet. It's pretty entertaining to watch him try to put the wall in his mouth. I think it's really cute that he has to learn that that won't work. I can't imagine how he'll react when he learns to crawl and can go explore on his own. With that in mind, babyproofing the house is on our list of things to do very soon!

Bathtime

The past week wasn't all screams. One highlight was the first time Mr. Mister smiled while taking a bath. He doesn't usually cry during his bath, but he never really relaxes either and grips the side of the plastic bathtub the whole time. So we were pretty excited to see him relax and smile as he played with his feet, splashed, and enjoyed the bath. Here's a cute picture.

Side Effects

I had no idea that new teeth came with such side effects. The past couple days have been a little rough. Apparently getting new teeth not only make babies fussier overall but they also make them not eat well and not sleep well. Our always happy, always smiling baby became a little more real this week as he screamed a lot during the day and screamed a lot during the night and screamed a lot while I tried to feed him his vegetables and cereal. Today was much better and he seemed back to his normal self. He even ate a new vegetable, butternut squash, without needing it mixed with oatmeal. I think the teeth finally pushed through so hopefully the most painful part is over. But it's been quite the week.

New Teeth + A Cold = No Fun

It was a rough afternoon with lots of crying as Mr. Mister is dealing with the pain of his teeth and the stuffiness of his cold. He can't breathe well and isn't sleeping well. I held him a lot and tried to distract him with fun things as much as I could, which worked for a couple minutes at a time until he remembered he was miserable. And, since desperate times call for desperate measures, we even watched a Baby Einstein video. It distracted him for a long time...he loves the colors and motions and music. The other night I put it on for the first time to keep our crying baby occupied until Mark got back from buying Baby Orajel for Mr. Mister's gums. It is amazing how the video instantly calms him down. We watched it in Spanish and I learned some new farm words. I can even sing Old MacDonald in Spanish now. The sad thing is that on Monday night after Mr. Mister finally went to bed, Mark and I continued watching the video. Yeah, we know, we need to get a life.

The Great Indoors

I think the saying is "the great outdoors" but these days it's all indoors for us. With ice, snow and cold, we don't really venture out too much, especially now that Mr. Mister has a cold. It was nice that Mark had a snow day yesterday so he was home with us all day. Today my dad came over for lunch. And it helps that Mr. Mister can now sit up and play a little more independently so I don't have to be holding him all day. Really, I don't mind not leaving the house for a couple days...sometimes it's nice to just watch it snow from in here.

A Tooth!

Actually 2 teeth! Mr. Mister's bottom two front teeth are just starting to poke through the gum. It caught us off guard. He was fussy the other day but I thought it was just the cold he was getting. That night when Mark went to feed him, he felt the sharp little edges poking through. It's so cute and I can't believe he is old enough to be getting teeth. Teeth today, college tomorrow. At least that's how it seems.

In other news, Mr. Mister has successfully eaten carrots and sweet potatoes with no allergic reaction and minimal spitting out. I tried avacado first, but that didn't go over very well. Actually, he didn't love the carrots and sweet potatoes at first either, but after I mixed them with his oatmeal, he ate them with no problem. I mean, who doesn't love pureed vegetables mixed in oatmeal?

Separation Anxiety

I took a big step yesterday in motherhood when I left Mr. Mister in the child care at the YMCA so I could go work out. One of us had major separation anxiety, and it wasn't Mr. Mister. I did feel better when I saw that they had an ExerSaucer there, because right now that is his favorite thing in the world. So I knew he'd be okay, but I hated leaving him there with new people in a new place. More than once during my run, I missed him and wanted to go check on him, but I knew that was just a new mom thing to do and I resisted the urge. An hour later I was excited to go pick him up. Sure enough, he had played in the ExerSaucer most of the time and was just as smiley as when I left him there. No emotional scars from feeling abandoned by his mother...what a relief.

10 Seconds of Fame

I was on the news the other day. Cincinnati's Channel 5 at 5:00. Here's the story.... an employee of a family fun park that's inside the mall near our house got arrested and since it had to do with children and he was a family fun park employee, it was a big deal. So the news crew was out getting reactions from local people.

I didn't know any of the story...I was just on my way to the car after stopping in at a store across from the mall to get diapers. I saw the Channel 5 van and immediately tried thinking about how I could avoid them...I HATE being on camera and I never know what to say in those awkward interview situations. So I tried to hurry into my car as they talked to someone else. But there is no hurrying when getting a baby into the car so they caught up with me. The reporter tried to casually ask me questions, like we were having a one on one conversation, except that the camera and microphone were in my face. They gave me a very brief explanation of what happened at the family fun park and then asked my reaction. I had no idea what to say. I put together some sentences, which was good enough for them, and then hurried into my car and drove away, thinking, "I really hope they don't put that on the news."

Sure enough, it was the lead story on the 5:00 news. And there I was, name and everything, talking about how shocked I was and how I definitely wouldn't go there now or something along those lines. I was so embarrassed. But I told Mark, "it's okay, no one watches the 5:00 news anyway." Five minutes later, my neighbor called. "Did you know you were just on the news?!"

I did get it on tape. My 10 seconds of fame.
